Boxing Punch Warm Up – System9 Boxing Training Pro Tips: No 01

Anthony Yarde & Tunde Ajayi training in Danny Garcia's Gym, Phillidelphia
Anthony Yarde and coach Tunde Ajayi training in DSG Boxing Club, Philadelphia

Here System9 creator and Head Coach Tunde Ajayi talks about the importance of a boxing punch warm up.

Hello SYS9r’s,

Today I’m going to talk about the importance of a boxing punch warm up before starting pad and mitt work.

This may be familiar to those of you who have seen training Videos of myself and Anthony Yarde (number one rated light heavyweight boxer in the world) . Like the one below training recently in DSG Boxing Club in Philadelphia. Thanks to @dannyswiftgarcia@crazyangelgarcia

It may seem very obvious to many but the amount of boxers and trainers that I still see in the gyms today that do not adequately prepare their bodies before going into pad work routines is shocking.

This is the main reason I introduced the 3 x 10 punch warm up.

This set of punches was the first EVER pad routine I wrote down many, many years ago which I am pleased to share with you all in the Pro Tips Training Series to accompany the FREE System9 Boxing Training App.

So before you start your combinations go though this simple to remember punch warm up once or twice. You can do it Shadow Boxing, on the Bag or on the Pad and Mitts.

Coach Tunde’s 3 x 10 boxing punch warm up combination routine.

3 x Jabs
3 x Right hands
3 x Left hooks
3 x Right hooks
3 x Left hooks to the body
3 x Right hooks to the body
3 x Left uppercuts
3 x Right uppercuts
3 x Jab, Cross
3 x Jab, Cross, Jab

I feel it covers all areas of warming up the body and stimulates the hand and eye movements which will all be used when you start moving forward to punching consistently as you progress through the System9 training combinations in the app.

In other words instead of doing traditional stretches to warm up the body your actually specifically warming up the punching muscles you will be using.

It’s also a good primer if your coaching, helping you to start a rhythm with your boxer on the pads before moving into more complex System9 combinations.

So download the app and start your journey mastering System9 but make sure you warm up before do it 😉

Anthony Yarde: From troubled beginnings to sporting excellence and boxing dreams

His first boxing experience came at around 14, Yarde says. “There was always confrontation in the area I grew up in. My mentality, I’ll be honest, was if someone tries it with me, I want to be able to knock them out.

“I thought the Mike Tyson story was beautiful and it drew me in. He was bullied, a small kid who started knocking out giants.”

It took until he was almost 20 for Yarde to take the profession seriously; he vowed to stay away from places trouble may lurk.

Six years on, he looks a natural. The combinations flow, the footwork is sharp and there’s an aura of invincibility about a man with 15 wins from 15 fights. He says he feels “at home in the ring”.

Ajayi, who tapped into esteemed trainer Roger Mayweather’s methods at the Mayweather Gym, is clearly lit up by Yarde’s prowess, refusing to call him a prospect.

“When I make statements like he has the best work ethic I’ve seen, I mean it,” says Ajayi. “I’ve seen Floyd Mayweather train, I’ve spent time in Freddie Roach’s gym in Los Angeles, and watched Manny Pacquiao. Anthony works harder. It’s his intensity.”

Anthony Yarde Returns to York Hall on Feb 24th

Hall of Fame Promoter Frank Warren returns to the World-famous York Hall on Saturday 24th February for an action-packed evening of boxing featuring some of the very best up-and-coming prospects in the UK, broadcast live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

Yarde (14-0, 13 KO’s) defends his WBO Intercontinental and European Light-Heavyweight titles against Frenchman Tony Averlant (26-9-2, 5 KO’s). A fruitful 2017 that saw Yarde pick up the Southern Area and WBO Intercontinental and European titles cemented his place as one of the hottest properties in British boxing.

“2017 was a good year for me,” said Yarde. “I picked up three belts and stopped all five of my opponents. This year is going to be bigger and better. My job is to keep my head down, work hard and enjoy the journey.

“I’m hoping that Averlant is a durable opponent, he’s only been stopped twice and one of those stoppages was against former WBA Light-Heavyweight World Champion Juergen Braeher.”
